Regarding the new attempt to ban communist ideology in the Czech Republic

Backed by the EU, whose official ideology is anti-communism, the Fiala government in the Czech Republic has pushed through despicable changes to the penal code. These changes provocatively criminalize support for communist ideology, equating it with Nazism and making it punishable by up to five years in prison. This paves the way for dangerous developments, such as the banning of the Communist Party and communist activity in the Czech Republic.

This unacceptable action is based on the dangerous theory of two extremes and the unhistorical ideology that equates the monster of fascism, a product of the decayed capitalist system, with socialism-communism.

Such measures serve to escalate the anti-people attack on workers’ and people’s rights, especially at a time of intensifying war preparations. This is reflected in the enormous military spending programmes outlined in the new Multi-annual Financial Framework. These plans go hand in hand with repression in the name of "internal security" and the exploitation of workers through exhausting working hours.

The people have the power to thwart the plans of the EU and bourgeois governments. Their nostalgia for the gains and achievements of socialism frightens the ruling class.

Based on the above, what position does the European Commission, which invokes the so-called ‘rule of law’ and ‘human rights’ on at every opportunity, take on the following issues:

— The unacceptable criminalization of the right to free political expression and activity of communists, but also of the people, which has turned into a real witch-hunt in the Czech Republic and one third of EU countries;

— The demand that all persecution of communists be stopped immediately and that all anti-communist laws prohibiting the activities of communist parties, which constitute a deprivation of fundamental freedoms of the people, be abolished in the Czech Republic, Poland, the Baltic states, and other EU member states?
