After its initiative the European Parliament's Group of Friendship and Solidarity with the People of Cuba supports the demand to award the Nobel prize to Cuban doctors
The KKE MEPs proposed to the European Parliament's Group of Friendship and Solidarity with the People of Cuba to support the initiative for awarding the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize to the "Henry Reeve" International Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics.
The proposal was unanimously accepted and on Monday 30/11 the European Parliament's Group of Friendship and Solidarity with the People of Cuba sent a letter to the Nobel Committee, requesting the awarding of Cuban doctors.
The KKE MEPs welcome the decision of the European Parliament's Group of Friendship and Solidarity with the People of Cuba and call for the widest possible support for the initiative.
The Covid-19 pandemic, which broke out about eight months ago, has affected more than 65 million people and claimed the lives of more than one million people worldwide.
Everyday we are experiencing the consequences of commodified health; the detrimental effect of the monopolies' action on the people regarding examination, diagnosis, treatment, medicine, and vaccine followed by the EU and the Member States, which, as tragically demonstrated in the past days, has completely failed also in Greece. However, at the other end there is Cuba : a small country that stands out in effectively tackling the pandemic, despite facing unacceptable sanctions and a long-lasting criminal embargo imposed by the USA and allied states, including countries where Cuba has provided valuable help, in the midst of the collapse of their own health systems that follow the reactionary concept of cost - benefit. The news that an Italian province, Sicily, is once again asking for Cuba's help in tackling the coronavirus pandemic (as happened during the first wave of the pandemic in the north of the country) is indicative.
Throughout the pandemic, the KKE expresses in practice its firm and unwavering solidarity with the Island of the Revolution and its people, whose first priority is the protection of human life.
